Starting with sketching can feel intimidating. You look at other people’s work and wonder how they make it look so easy. The truth is, every artist starts at the same place. The difference is practice and a few good habits. This guide will help you build confidence and actually enjoy the process.

1. Start with Basic Shapes

Everything around you can be broken down into simple shapes like circles, squares, and cylinders.

Instead of trying to draw a face or a hand perfectly, start by sketching the basic structure:

  • Heads → circles

  • Bodies → ovals and rectangles

  • Objects → combinations of cubes and cylinders

This makes complex drawings much easier to manage.

2. Keep Your Lines Light

Pressing too hard too soon makes it difficult to fix mistakes.

Use light, loose lines at the beginning. Think of them as a rough guide, not the final drawing. Once you’re happy with the shape, you can go over it with darker lines.
